At Actikem we are passionate about offering students the opportunity to gain valuable experience of working within the science industry to provide them with a platform for further development and future prospects.
We recently welcomed chemical engineering student, Lauren Halliwell from Carmel College to join Actikem on a 4-week work experience placement.
The focus of Lauren’s work experience was to give her experience of chemical engineering technologies.
Working closely with our QC Technician, Mike Steele and Managing Director, Andrew Mooney, Lauren got the opportunity to learn what lab and production methods go into to producing various chemical solutions and formulas.
In the laboratory, Lauren got experience of extraction and purification techniques along with testing for total solids content and the testing of the dynamic viscosity of liquids.
In production, Lauren was given instruction of the various pumps used for the transfer of liquids into mixing vessels, how vessels can be cleaned and tested for cleanliness as well as local exhaust ventilation technologies to deal with powder hazards.
Finally, Lauren learnt about how an organisation improves and maintains its standards to achieve an ISO9001 accreditation.
On completion of her work experience, Lauren said “I have enjoyed every second of my time at Actikem and have learnt a lot about the industry. The people that work at Actikem are kind and happy to help me with any problems I may have. Thanks to all at Actikem for this amazing opportunity”.
“It’s been great to build a new link with another local college and help promote STEM careers especially for women. We certainly benefited from having Lauren working here in our laboratory. I’m sure she will have gained a lot of valuable experience that will help in her future career. We wish Lauren all the best and hope to keep in touch”. Actikem Managing Director, Andrew Mooney
